David Freeman was in Mercedes heaven during a recent trip to South Africa, which has more than a few old stars on its roads. Of all the cars he saw, it was this 230E that he remembers most fondly. “With its tatty blue paintwork and missing chrome trim, it was by no means perfect, but it confirmed the ‘die hard’ reputation of the 123. I spoke to the owner about the car and he still uses it regularly.”

"Mercedes-Benz built over 33,000 124-series 230CEs, but we bet none of them look quite like this one, spotted by reader Daran from Shirley in south east London. Finished in taxi beige, it features 1980s style ‘racing stripes’ along its flanks and rear, plus a tow bar, and even pink carnations on its radio antenna. Needless to say this 1990 coupe livened up the car park of Ikea in Croydon."

“I came across this interesting S-Class on my travels to Lebanon,” says reader Jason Moses from Sydney, Australia. “At first the car appeared to be a W221. But upon closer inspection it is actually a heavily modified W140. To make it even more bizarre, it had the interior from a W220. Not something you would see every day!”

Cue hasty fumbling in my bag for my camera, and then soothing relief when I managed to capture the moment. Needless to say, it made my holiday...”

“I spotted this beauty whilst on holiday in La Palma, Canaries, and what a cracker it is!” says reader Alan Large. “I think it’s an old Fintail SE model.” You could be right, Alan. The chrome side strip suggests it’s a top W112 300SE model.
